| Info | Rachel Mills was born in Worthington, Minnesota. At age 11, she moved to a remote area of Haiti with her family so her father, a surgeon, could practice tropical medicine at a mission hospital. At age 12, she was homeschooled by her mother, a stay-at-home Mom and Educator. At age 13, she studied at a Christian boarding school in Port-au-Prince. Her parents still travel far and wide providing free healthcare to the third world, and prematurely grey hair to their daughter. Her parents recently returned from Afghanistan where they served at a privately funded mission hospital. Though proud of his giving heart, his daughter selfishly wishes he would settle down and stay out of the war zones. Maybe garden or something. He muses, "The bombs in Afghanistan are less dangerous than the lawyers in America."
Anyway, after three years in Haiti, the family moved to Oklahoma, where her father worked at a government hospital for Cherokee Indians. After two years, they returned to North Carolina, where her parents originally met. She finished High School in Avery County, NC. She received her degree at UNC-Chapel Hill with a major in History and coursework in Economics, Politics and Law. She studied a total of 6 months at Oxford University in England during her college career.
After college, Rachel sold real estate with Sotheby's and taught ballroom dance at Carolina Dancesport. For the past three years she has been a Network Surveillance Engineer at MCI Worldcom. She also co-founded a nonprofit that specializes in performing comedy for hospital and nursing home patients. Although she resigned the presidency of Inspiration Theater after nearly four years to make time for political goals, she performs when possible and sits on the Board of Directors.
She is married to Michael Owen, a PhD candidate in Astrophysics at NC State and a Durham County Commissioner candidate. They live in Durham, attend Lowes Grove Baptist Church, and have three dogs, two cats.
