InfoMichael D. (Mike) Polensek was born in Cleveland, Ohio in November of 1949. He attended the old Nottingham and Hannah Gibbons Elementary Schools, and graduated from Collinwood High School in January 1969. He went on to study Industrial Management at Cuyahoga Community College's Metro Campus through the Cleveland Scholarship Program. He worked in the field of social services with a special expertise in youth development and then took a job at White Motor Company, where he joined the U.A.W. Local 32. It was here where he was first challenged to speak out on issues that concerned him.

Polensek was elected to Cleveland City Council in November 1977, representing the old Ward 26. Since January 1982, he has represented Cleveland's 11th Ward. He has often stated that, "My previous work taught me to try to really get to know and understand people who are affected by the issues we address in Council." As a council member, he is obligated to the people of his community to work with the city administration and its departments to ensure that the best services are provided to the Ward 11 area, as well as participate in passing a balanced budget for the entire city of Cleveland. This obligation to his constituents has run for eight consecutive terms in Council, a total of 25 years, and he is now the "Dean" of Cleveland City Council.

During his time in Council, he has served on numerous committees as member and chairperson. Currently, he serves on the Employment, Affirmative Action and Training, Health & Human Services, Public Service and Public Utilities committees. In November 1999, he was unanimously elected as President of Cleveland City Council and worked diligently for his neighborhood as well as to create a legislative body that provided the same proven leadership for all of Cleveland's neighborhoods. Through his leadership, Council created the Neighborhood Equity Fund, which targeted funds for neighborhood development projects. He served as Council President until January 2002.

Polensek has a consistent record of progressive civic leadership and is instrumental in large-scale development in the Ward 11 community. In addition, he has introduced numerous pieces of legislation for the benefit of all Clevelanders. Polensek's civic obligations include membership in numerous organizations, including the Collinwood Village Homeowner's Association, the Nottingham Civic Club, and the Waterloo Beach Homeowner's Association. He is also the founder of the Collinwood Nottingham Villages Development Corporation and the Northeast Shores Development Corporation in Ward 11.

Councilman Polensek and his wife, Kathy, live on Brian Avenue in the North Shore Collinwood area and attend St. Mary's Church. He is also the proud father of Lisa, Deana, Michael, Lauren and Andrew.

"I have a high regard for my fellow council members; we are probably one of the most cooperative councils in the country. These years have been great years for me, being able to serve the city where I grew up, and to make a difference in the neighborhood I love. I look forward to making an even greater contribution in the years to come."
