Atwood was born in 11/1795 in Hudson NH.
He studied theology in the Baptist Theological Seminary in Waterville ME and became a Baptist minister in 1826. His first service in the ministry was in New Boston NH in 1826; he later served congregations in Hillsborough, Lyndeborough, and Francestown.

Nominated for NH Governor at the Democratic State Convention in 1850, but when information about his opposition to the Compromise of 1850 became known, leading Democrats in the state (including future President Franklin Pierce) called a new convention that stripped him of his nomination. Atwood wrote a famous letter that stated his opinion that slavery was morally objectionable. The Free Soil Party nominated Atwood as their nominee thereafter.
After the 1851 election, Atwood moved to New Boston NH and continued his work in the ministry.
He died of heart disease in New Boston NH on 4/28/1873.
