InfoCouncilwoman Dona Brady was born and raised in Ward 19 on Cleveland’s West Side. She is married to Dan Brady who serves in the Ohio State Senate. Dona is grateful for the opportunity to serve the residents of Ward 19 as their representative to Cleveland City Council stating, “I enjoy working to assist residents and continuing the progress we have made in revitalizing the residential and commercial areas of our neighborhoods.”

A 16-year record of public service preceeded Brady’s election to Council in 2000. Prior to her election to City Council, she served as President of the West Boulevard Neighborhood Association. “I have seen a lot of progress in Cleveland, but I dream of a city that is even better, with more emphasis on neighborhood revitalization and services for working families. This is what I am working toward.”

Dona helped found the Westown Community Development Corporation and is a past President of the Board of Trustees. Westown CDC is the local community organization that provides many services to Ward 19 residents. Councilwoman Brady, through the ward’s Community Development Block Grant, allocates funds for many of these services, including crime watch, housing code enforcement and home maintenance assistance in addition to commercial revitalization programs. Brady represents a culturally diverse ward on Cleveland’s West Side. Her interest in public service, her commitment to multiculturalism, and her compassion for others have deep roots in her own heritage. Her mother and maternal grandparents immigrated to Cleveland from Germany through Ellis Island in 1927. Her paternal great grandparents arrived in Cleveland in the mid-1890s. Her paternal grandfather was Italian-American and her paternal grandmother was Albanian-American. Thus, Brady experienced multiculturalism first hand, growing up in a household that spoke four languages: Italian, Albanian, English, and German. Brady follows her great grandfather, grandfather and father into service for the City of Cleveland. Ms. Brady has been active in the Albanian-American Association of Cleveland, which she helped organize in 1998 with the participation of Albanian immigrants who arrived in Cleveland after the collapse of Communism. Previously, she served as President of the group. In 1999, during the war in Kosovo, Yugoslavia she was instrumental in helping coordinate the resettlement of Kosovar Albanian refugees in Cleveland for which she was honored by International Services Center.
