InfoThe Honorable Nelson Cintron, Jr. achieved his lifelong dream of representing his community on City Council when he was elected in 1997. Cintron, the first Hispanic elected to Cleveland City Council, was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico in 1966. He came to Cleveland as an infant and has since lived in the Ward 14 area that he represents.

Cintron graduated from Lincoln West High School in 1984 and has a long record of community service. This includes formerly serving on the boards of the Spanish American Committee and the Puerto Rico Society of Cleveland. Cintron was instrumental in expanding the Puerto Rican Festival and Parade to four days in 1995 and, in 1991, was the first to bring 24-hour Spanish language programming to Cleveland radio.

Cintron's varied work experience contributes to his success. He has worked in a number of factories, as a corrections officer for the Sheriff's Department and as a clerk in the County Recorder's office. In addition, Cintron served as a union steward and has a strong commitment to organized labor. Throughout his career, he has been outspoken in support of the right of workers to organize and to be represented by unions.

Cintron, a member of Hispanic Elected Local Officials, attributes his interest and commitment to politics and public service to his mentor, Congressman Dennis Kucinich, who encouraged his interest in these areas at a very young age.

Councilman Cintron lives in the Clark/Fulton neighborhood with his family.
