Info | Roosevelt Coats, a native of Forkland, Alabama, moved to Cleveland, Ohio after graduating high school. He earned an associates degree in business administration from Dyke College in 1981, completed labor law courses at Kenyon College and is a graduate of the Leadership Cleveland class of 1991.
Coats' character was forged during his teen-aged years when he was an active participant in the civil rights movements. He took part in the famous Selma to Montgomery March and was present in Birmingham, Alabama during the height of the violence.
Prior to being appointed to Cleveland City Council in 1987, Coats served in the United States Air Force for four years and was a union representative for the United Steelworkers of America.
Councilman Coats has a long history of commitment and involvement within the Ward 10 community. Since being elected to Council, he has provided his constituents with effective leadership and distinctive service. Coats has worked hard and steadily, to redevelop his ward and create economic development opportunities for his community.
In addition to securing funding for neighborhood recreation services and retail rehabilitation, Coats has been a strong leader and advocate for social programs and policies. Coats has championed the cause of race relations and has sponsored legislation to assist victims of ethnic intimidation. He has also worked diligently to provide for and to protect low income persons, the elderly and the homeless by supporting funding for meals programs and for improved housing for persons who are socially and economically deprived.
Coats is very active at the national level as well. Currently, Coats is the Vice-Chair of the National League of Cities' (NLC) Public Safety and Crime Prevention Steering Committee and has served on NLC's Transportation and Communication Steering Committee. In addition, Coats is currently Past President of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO), and has served NBC-LEO as First Vice President, Second Vice President, Regional Director and Director-at-Large.
Coats also serves as a steward of the Lee Memorial A.M.E. Church, where he has been a member for more than 20 years.
