"Born deaf, Ed’s parents strongly believed in giving their children the best possible education. Ed learned to read lips and attended public schools in Los Angeles through high school. He graduated from Stanford University in 1978 with a B.A. in Human Biology and then received a graduate degree in Biostatistics from the University of Washington.

After working as a legal assistant on environmental and land-use issues with Preston Gates & Ellis, Ed began working for Seattle City Light as an environmental analyst, project manager, and employee coach. Ed negotiated major environmental protection agreements among tribes, utilities, and government agencies, including a 30-year, $2.8 million erosion control and native plant propagation plan for City Light’s Skagit River dams. Ed also received a one-year special assignment to coach City Light employees.

Since 1999, Ed has worked for the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. He has served as Neighborhood District Coordinator, first in the Queen Anne/Magnolia neighborhoods, and now in the Lake City/Northgate/Maple Leaf district. In this role, Ed has actively built new partnerships and created positive change. By working diligently with city, county, neighborhood, and nonprofit partners, Ed was instrumental in establishing the Uptown Queen Anne Neighborhood Center. He has worked to promote revitalization of the Northgate area, and he helped create the Northgate stakeholders group, which has been a highly successful forum for community-developer-government partnerships."
