| Info | ROCKWELL, Julius, (father of Francis Williams Rockwell), a Representative and a Senator from Massachusetts; born in Colebrook, Conn., April 26, 1805; attended private schools; graduated from Yale College in 1826; studied law; admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Pittsfield, Mass., in 1830; member, State house of representatives 1834-1838, and served three years as speaker; State bank commissioner 1838-1840; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1851); was not a candidate for renomination in 1850; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1853; appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Edward Everett and served from June 3, 1854, to January 31, 1855, when a successor was elected; presidential elector on the Republican ticket in 1856; member, State house of representatives 1858, and served as speaker; appointed as judge of the superior court of Massachusetts in 1859 and resigned in 1886; died in Lenox, Berkshire County, Mass., May 19, 1888; interment in Lenox Cemetery.
