| Info | Jeffrey Smith "Jeff" Groscost, former Speaker of the Arizona House, passed away unexpectedly of heart failure at his home on November 3, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Dana Ipsen Groscost. Jeff was the love of her life. His beloved children are sons; Chad, Logan, Gunnar, Griffin, and Jesse and daughter Reagan, ages 19-2. There was nothing more important in his life than his children. Jeff was born the second of five children to Charles Kenneth and Catherine Smith Groscost in Tooele, Utah on April 29, 1961. He moved to Mesa as a young child and attended Mesa High School, BYU, and ASU. Jeff was a devoted and life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as a young man served a mission for the church in Curitiba, Brazil. He was currently serving in the Bishopric of the Southern Estates Ward in the Mesa Kimball Stake. He served faithfully in many church callings over the years but none gave him more satisfaction than his work with the youth. Jeff was fun, energetic, and untiring in his efforts to encourage the Boy Scouts in their activities and advancements. He assisted innumerable young men in achieving their Eagle rank, which he had also earned as a youth. For his great service he was presented the Silver Beaver, the highest award in scouting. Jeff was first elected to the Arizona State Legislature in 1992 and served as Speaker of the House for over 3 years, starting in 1997. He was the youngest Speaker in the nation at that time. He was described by many as a "master" of the legislative process. He also had many business interests over the years. The family will have wonderful memories of the many activities and experiences they shared together. Jeff made sure of that. He seized every opportunity with great enthusiasm. Jeff was a larger-than-life personality with a bright and creative mind, a commanding sense of leadership, sharp wit and sense of humor, and an optimism which endeared him to those who knew him. While Jeff was dedicated to serving the people of Arizona, nothing stood between him and his family. No official duties were more important to him than his children and their activities. Jeff coached and enthusiastically supported his children at their swim meets, ball games, class elections and more importantly, family scripture reading. family prayer and family home evening. He always put his family first for which we will be eternally grateful. He will be missed so very much. Besides his immediate family survivors include his parents Ken and Catherine Groscost, brother Gregory (Misty), sisters Elizabeth (Wayne) Carroll, Kristen (Joel) Babbitt, and Amy Groscost. Many nieces and nephews loved and will greatly miss "Uncle Jeff", his infectious laugh, all his pet creatures and all of the fun times with him. The Groscost family is deeply grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support from Jeff's neighbors, colleagues, and friends from across the state. All services will be held at the Mesa Kimball Stake Building at 1266 South 32nd Street in Mesa (just south of Southern Avenue). There will be a viewing on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and 1 hour prior to services. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 9, 2006.
