InfoPaul E. Bucher, 49, was born and raised on Milwaukee’s south side, the son of a single mother who raised six boys while working as a telephone operator and saleswoman at Gimbels’ Department Store. He credits his mother, Anne, as being his role model and the person who showed him the importance of public service and a strong work ethic. Bucher’s brothers have also been successful in many walks of life. His brother, Mark, founded and runs the Boulevard Ensemble, a respected storefront theater in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood. Bucher graduated from Pius XI high school in Milwaukee in 1973 and received a bachelor’s degree in social work/criminal justice from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1977 (Dean’s list). In 1981, he received his Juris Doctorate from Marquette University Law School. While in law school, Bucher worked as an Intern in the Waukesha County District Attorney’s office. While working under the State’s student practice rule, Bucher began successfully trying traffic cases and other criminal cases. After graduating from law school, Bucher took a position with then-state Senator Susan Engeleiter. While with Engeleiter, Bucher worked as a Legislative Aide and later her Executive Assistant.

Bucher joined the Waukesha County District Attorney’s office in 1983 as an Assistant District Attorney in that office. While an Assistant District Attorney, Bucher successfully tried a wide variety of cases, ranging from speeding, drunk driving, and sexual assault to complicated narcotic cases. In 1988, Gov. Tommy G. Thompson appointed Bucher to become Waukesha County’s District Attorney. Bucher is the county’s longest serving district attorney in its history, having been elected/appointed to 10 terms. Bucher was most recently reelected in November of 2004 to his 10th term as Waukesha County District Attorney. As District Attorney, Bucher supervises one of the largest law firms in the county with a staff of 15 prosecutors and numerous support staff and a $2 million budget. In addition to running his own successful re-election campaigns, Bucher has run numerous successful election campaigns for other elected officials in Waukesha County.

Bucher also maintains a heavy caseload for himself and is frequently in court personally successfully prosecuting homicides, sexual assault, drunken driving, government corruption, and other cases. Throughout his tenure, Bucher has consistently been a local and state law enforcement leader. Gov. Thompson and other state and federal officials repeatedly recognized his leadership skills by appointing Bucher to serve on state and federal commissions and task forces. He is a two-time Past President of the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association and a former 1st Vice President of the Waukesha County Republican Party. Bucher is also a longtime prolific community volunteer and the architect of numerous community crime-prevention organizations. He has modernized his office, creating specialized units and a sophisticated case management system. Bucher is the recipient of numerous state and local law enforcement awards and is a frequent presenter at law enforcement and prosecutor training sessions throughout the state, county, and nation. Bucher is married to wife Jessica, a journalism instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, political columnist for wispolitics.com, and television political/current affairs panelist. Bucher, a resident of Merton, has four children: Breanne, Timothy, Christopher and Matthew, and one on the way.
