Info | Asa W. Tenney was a New York jurist and Republican orator.
He born 5/20/1833 in Dalton NH. After his primary and secondary schooling, he served as a local school teacher (early 1850s).
Tenney worked his way through Dartmouth (graduating in 1859), began to practice law in Lancaster NH, and then in 1862 entered a law firm in New York City.
In 1864, Tenney served as one of the itinerant Republican speakers in favor of the re-election of Abraham Lincoln.
During Reconstruction, Tenney agreed to organize the Republican Party in Georgia. He scheduled a meeting in Savannah, and held a mass meeting where 10,000 people heard him call for both sides to look forward to a newly united nation (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 8/3/1912).
President Grant appointed Tenney U.S. district attorney for the Eastern District of New York in 1873, a post he held for 14 years, retiring in 1889. In 1897, President McKinley appointed him back to the post, but he only held it for four months until his death.
Tenney died in his home at 190 Washington Park of Bright's disease on 12/10/1897 (New York Times, 12/11/1897).
