U.S. Representative (D-NC) 1841-1845; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1845.
Supported the secession movement in 1861; member of the First Confederate Congress in 1861; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1863 to the Second Confederate Congress; delegate to the Union National Convention at Philadelphia in 1866; chairman of the court of common pleas and quarter sessions for Nash County in 1866 and 1867; county commissioner in 1868; engaged in the management of his estate; died at his country home near Nashville, Nash County, N.C., July 20, 1872; interment in the family graveyard on his plantation.
