After the Civil War, Wilcox was affiliated with the Conservative Party. He became disillusioned with the Conservatives in the mid-1870s and became a Republican.
Delegate to the Republican National Convention of 1892 and supported Pres. Benjamin Harrison for re-nomination.
In 1898, the Republican congressional district convention nominated US Rep. Linney for another term after the majority of the delegates bolted. The bolting delegates wanted to break the tie with the Populist Party; they met separately and nominated Wilcox. However, he died soon after this nomination and prior to the election.
