InfoAndrew John Bower Mitchell

Conservative politician, the son of David Mitchell (a longserving Hampshire Tory MP). Educated at Rugby and Oxbridge, before elected for the Nottinghamshire constituency of Gedling he was first an officer in the Royal Tank Regiment and then an investment banker. He was a junior minister in the Major government, but lost his seat to Labour's Vernon Coaker in the 1997 General Election. He returned to the Commons for the safe Conservative seat of Sutton Coldfield in suburban Birmingham. He served as David Cameron's International Development Secretary from 2010 until 2012 and was appointed Chief Whip in 2012. Shortly after his appointment to the latter post he was accused of acting in a verbally abusive manner ('f***ing plebs') to a police officer outside Downing Street.

Member of Parliament for Gedling 1987-1997, for Sutton Coldfield 2001-present.
Secetary of State for International Development 2010-2012, Chief Whip 2012-present.
