Info | Robert William Ainsworth
Born in Coventry, Ainsworth worked at the Jaguar plant in the city where he became an active trade unionist. Elected to Coventry City Council in 1984 he became the deputy of the Labour group and served on the authority until 1993. Ainsworth was selected as the Labour candidate for Coventry North East following the deselection of left-wing MP John Hughes. Ainsworth served as a junior minister in various positions during the Blair government before being appointed Deputy Chief Whip in 2003. Ainsworth was appointed as Defence Secretary in 2009. Despite a poor relationship with senior military staff, he served in that position for the remainder of the Brown government before retiring to the backbenches following Labour's defeat at the 2010 General Election.
