| Info | Shirley Bond was elected to represent the riding of Prince George-Mount Robson in the 2001 general election and was immediately appointed as the Minister of Advanced Education. On September 20, 2004, she was appointed as Deputy Premier of British Columbia and in December of 2004 she became the Minister of Health Services. Shirley has served on the Government Caucus Committee on Health and as the Vice-Chair of the Government Caucus Committee on Education. She has also served as the Vice-Chair of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada.
Before being elected as an MLA in 2001, Shirley had a long history of community involvement and service in Prince George. While completing a two-year Arts and Science program at the College of New Caledonia from 1974 to 1976, Shirley worked during the summers as a Student Program Coordinator who designed and supervised a "Moms and Kids" drop-in program and as a Student Placement Officer. She joined the Prince George School District’s Continuing Education Department in 1976 and, upon her departure in 1982, had attained the position of Business Manager. Over the next eight years, Shirley became increasingly involved in serving her community, including youth sports, the arts and as a school volunteer. In 1991 Shirley was elected the District Parent Advisory Council chair, serving until 1993 when she was elected as a trustee on the Prince George School Board. In 1996, she was elected to serve as Chair of that Board. In 1998, Shirley enrolled at the University of Northern BC where she pursued a political science degree.
Shirley’s previous involvements include: City of Prince George Standing Committee on Youth member; 2001 Special Olympics Summer Games protocol director; Personal Living Choices Society board member; Carey Theological College management board member; and Trinity Opportunity Fund Grants Committee board member. She is a former member of the Prince George Mayor’s Task Force on Youth Violence, and the School District Administrative Restructuring Commission Task Force as well as numerous other volunteer roles within her church and community. Shirley earned the 2000 BC Interior, North & Yukon Woman of Distinction Award for her work in public education.
Shirley, who was born in Prince George, is a third generation northerner who believes that public service is essential. She has demonstrated that passionately and continuously through her involvement in her community. She and her husband Bill have been married for 26 years and have two adult children, Melissa and Christopher. Melissa is currently completing a second degree to become a teacher and Chris is attending the College of New Caledonia.
