InfoBUTLER, William Morgan, a Senator from Massachusetts; born in New Bedford, Mass., January 29, 1861; attended the public schools; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1883; graduated from the law department of Boston University in 1884; practiced law in New Bedford until 1895; member, State house of representatives 1890-1891; member, State senate 1892-1895, serving as president in 1894 and 1895; moved to Boston, Mass., in 1895 and continued the practice of law until 1912, when he engaged in the manufacture of cotton goods; member of the commission to revise the statutes of Massachusetts 1896-1900; chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1924; appointed on November 13, 1924, as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Henry Cabot Lodge and served from November 13, 1924, to December 6, 1926, when a successor was elected; unsuccessful candidate for election to fill the vacancy; chairman, Committee on Patents (Sixty-ninth Congress); resumed his manufacturing interests; resided in Boston until his death there on March 29, 1937; interment in Forest Hills Cemetery.
