| Info | Rosario Marin, of Huntington Park, California, was sworn in as the 41st Treasurer of the United States by Secretary Paul O'Neill on August 16, 2001. Ms. Marin is the first Mexican born U.S. Treasurer to hold this office. She is also the highest Latina to serve in President George W. Bush's Administration.
Before taking this office, Ms. Marin served as mayor and councilwoman of Huntington Park, a city of 85,000 residents, with a population that is 99 percent Hispanic. She was first elected to the city council in 1994 and was overwhelmingly re-elected in 1999. Concurrently with serving the citizens of Huntington Park, Ms. Marin worked for AT&T as Public Relations Manager for the Hispanic Market in the Southern California Region.
Previously she served as Deputy Director of the Governor's Office of Community Relations, in Los Angeles, as part of the administration of former Governor Pete Wilson. Prior to this, she served as Assistant Deputy Director of the California State Department of Social Services. In addition, Ms. Marin served as the Chair of the State Council on Developmental Disabilities and previously was Chief of Legislative Affairs for the Department of Developmental Services.
As a result of having a son, Eric, with Down's Syndrome, Ms. Marin's commitment to people with disabilities has earned her numerous awards including the distinguished Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Prize at the United Nations in June 1995, the highest international recognition. Ms. Marin was only the second recipient to receive this honor.
In addition, Ms. Marin most recently was honored by being the only publicly elected official to receive the Excellence in Public Service Award at the 2000 Latino Perspectives Conference in Sacramento. She also was one of two elected officials to be featured on the "20 Up and Coming Latinas" in the Los Angeles Business Journal, February 2000 issue.
Ms. Marin is a graduate of California State University in Los Angeles and also a graduate of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government Programs for Senior Executives in State and Local Government.
Ms. Marin and her husband Alex have three children, Eric, Carmen and Alex.
