The Honorable Alice H. Martin is the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. President George W. Bush nominated her, court appointed on September 29, 2001, and confirmed by the United States Senate on November 6, 2001. President Bush's appointment made her the first female United States Attorney to serve the Northern District of Alabama.

Mrs. Martin leads the largest United States Attorney's Office in Alabama. The office serves 60% of the population of Alabama, who reside in the northernmost thirty-one counties. There are approximately 45 Assistant United States Attorneys who litigate criminal, civil and tax matters in the United States District Court from their offices in Birmingham and Huntsville. Mrs. Martin has been selected to serve on the U.S. Attorney General's Advisory Committee for a two-year term effective January 1st, 2004. This committee is composed of U.S. Attorneys who deal with issues confronting the Department of Justice and impacting the work of the nation's 93 U.S. Attorneys. She also serves on the subcommittees for Terrorism/National Security, Violent Crime, White Collar Crime/Fraud, the Office of Management and Budget, and on the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Working Group.

Prior to being appointed United States Attorney, Mrs. Martin was an Alabama state trial court judge. She was appointed to the Florence Municipal Court in 1993, and became a member of the Twenty-First Judicial Circuit Court bench in 1999. As a judge, Mrs. Martin presided over criminal and civil jury and non-jury trials. She was an instructor for the Administrative Office of Courts for the State of Alabama, and served as an editor for the Circuit Court Judge's "Bench Manual" on Domestic Violence in Alabama. Mrs. Martin also served on the Governor's Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and the Governor's Advisory Committee on Domestic Violence. She is a certified civil and domestic relations mediator.

Prior to her judicial career, Mrs. Martin served as an Assistant United States Attorney for six years in the Western District of Tennessee - Memphis. As a federal prosecutor, she handled violence crimes, white-collar crimes, and defended government agencies involved in social security, bankruptcy, and medical malpractice litigation. Mrs. Martin has also enjoyed work in the private sector of law handling primarily medical malpractice defense and product liability actions. She has also practiced in the area of criminal defense law.

Mrs. Martin received her undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, from Vanderbilt University. She is a Registered Nurse, and worked as a nurse during law school. She received her Juris Doctorate in 1981 from the University of Mississippi. She is licensed to practice law in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. She lives in North Alabama with her husband and three children.
