InfoJohn D. (David) Whetstone was born December 13, 1944 in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of Luke Whetstone of Troy and Marie Andrew Whetstone of Geneva, both deceased. Whetstone's father is still remembered from his football coaching days at schools in Fort Deposit, Ozark, and Greenville, and at Starke Military Academy in Montgomery. Whetstone's mother was an English teacher. David Whetstone was raised in Greenville, the middle child of seven.

On December 22, 1971, while in law school, David Whetstone married the former Lynne Riecke. Lynne is a school teacher. The Whetstones are about to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, and are the proud parents of three children�Deborah (24), J.D. (21), and Chris (20). Deborah is studying abroad. J.D. is a United States Marine. Chris attends the University of Alabama.

The Whetstones are active members of St. Andrew by the Sea Church, and Lynne sings in the choir. David is President of the Baldwin County Sports Festival, bringing Olympic-style games to the children of the county, and he has coached girls' softball, boys' basketball, and boys' baseball in Gulf Shores. Whetstone is a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Bay Minette, and former secretary of the Board of Directors of Gulf Shores Golf Club.




Education and Military Service


Whetstone graduated from Greenville High School in 1963, and attended the University of Alabama and the University of West Florida, where he earned his degree in political science in 1970. Upon graduation from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1973, he was admitted to the Alabama Bar. Whetstone served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War era, and worked his way through college and law school by using the G.I. Bill.

David Whetstone's Air Force service began in 1964. He attended the Air to Ground Radio School in Biloxi, Mississippi, and was stationed for three years in Honolulu, Hawaii as an air-to-ground operator during the height of the Vietnam War. He was promoted to the rank of Shift Supervisor as Sergeant, and provided air-to-ground radio operations for "Air Force One" and the President of the United States. Whetstone was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1968.
