Info | James H. "Jim" Maloney
James H. Maloney is serving his third term representing Connecticut's Fifth Congressional District. Congressman Maloney's top priority is to enhance the quality of life of Connecticut's families. As a Congressman and a former State Senator, he has established a strong record as a moderate, can-do legislator who has been successful at striking a sensible balance on both social and economic issues.
As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Maloney has worked to bring new economic opportunities to his district, provide small businesses with the tools necessary for growth, facilitate the expansion of the financial services sector, and expand housing, cultural and recreational opportunities throughout the district. Maloney also serves on the House Armed Services Committee, where he has worked to preserve key defense jobs by securing continued opportunities for Connecticut's defense contractors and employees. As a member of the New Democratic Coalition in the House, Maloney is a strong voice for moderate, fiscally responsible, forward-looking policies.
In his first term, Congressman Maloney authored three bills that each improved the quality of life in Connecticut. The Brownfields Economic Revitalization Act authorizes the use of federal resources for the assessment and clean-up of old industrial sites, known as Brownfields, which in turn helps to create jobs, raise property values, and clean-up the environment. The "Law Enforcement/School Partnership Act" helps prevent school violence and juvenile crime by using federal funds to hire specially trained community police officers to work with students and faculty. The Weir Farm Expansion Act preserves open space and expands and enhances Weir Farm, in Ridgefield and Wilton, Connecticut's only National Park.
During his second term, Maloney strengthened educational opportunities for young people by working to reduce class size and increase funding for school construction and modernization. He was the principal author of the "Pro-Family, Pro-Growth, Pro-Reform Tax Reduction Act," which sought to reduce the burden of taxes on families and business enterprises within the context of a balanced federal budget. Several key provisions of this Act were passed in the 2000 Session. A strong advocate for seniors, Maloney supported a Social Security "lock box," and the creation of a comprehensive prescription drug program through Medicare.
In the Connecticut State Senate, Maloney represented the 24th District and was twice named "Legislator of the Year" by leading state-wide Connecticut organizations. The oldest of ten children, Maloney was born on September 17, 1948, and is a graduate of Harvard University (B.A., American History, cum laude) and Boston University School of Law (Juris Doctor, concentrating in the law of Public Finance). He resides in Danbury with his wife, Mary, and their three daughters, Adele, Anna, and Ellen.
