InfoCRAWFORD, William Thomas, a Representative from North Carolina; born in Crabtree Township, Haywood County NC 6/1/1856; attended the public schools and Waynesville Academy; public school teacher. In 1882, Crawford moved to Colorado but returned later in the year. He served as clerk in the Howell & Rogers general store in Waynesville 1883-1886.

Member of the State house of representatives 1884-1888; Presidential Elector in 1889, casting an electoral vote for Cleveland and Thurman; engrossing clerk of the State house of representatives in 1889; was graduated from the law department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1890; was admitted to the bar in 1891 and commenced practice in Waynesville

US House (D-NC) 1891-1895, 1899-1900, 1907-1909. His nomination in 1890 was difficult, as the district convention faced several active contenders for the nomination. Unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1894, 1900, 1908.

During his first term in Congress, Crawford obtained a license to practice law. Delegate to the American Bimetallic League in Washington, D.C., in 1893.

Presidential Elector in 1905. During the 1904 campaign, Crawford and his Republican opponent ___ Benbow travelled together and held debates throughout the district.

Delegate to the Democratic State conventions 1900-1912; delegate to the gubernatorial convention in 1908.

Resumed the practice of law in Waynesville, N.C., where he died November 16, 1913; interment in Green Hill Cemetery.
