InfoGordon Gray has been the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Egypt since July 1, 2002. He is currently serving as the Chargé d’Affaires due to Ambassador Welch’s permanent departure from post on March 15. In addition to his service in Egypt, Mr. Gray was the first U.S. diplomat to travel to Libya in 2004.

Prior to his assignment to Egypt, Mr. Gray served as the Director of three key offices at the State Department: Arabian Peninsula Affairs (2001-2002); Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Operations (1999-2001); and Counterterrorism (1996-1999).

Mr. Gray began his career in government as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco, where he taught English in a local high school. After joining the Foreign Service in 1982, he studied Urdu in preparation for his posting to Pakistan, and then served in Jordan. Upon his return to Washington in 1987, Mr. Gray was assigned to the Bureau of Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs, first as staff assistant and then as desk officer for Kuwait and political-military affairs officer for Saudi Arabia. He also served on the Soviet desk (1990-1992) and as a political officer in Canada (1992-1996).

Mr. Gray received his B.A. from Yale and his M.A. from Columbia. He is a member of the American Foreign Service Association, the Middle East Institute, and the D.C. Road Runners Club. Mr. Gray has received several State Department awards, including Senior Performance Pay and Superior and Meritorious Honor awards.

Mr. Gray and his wife have three children. In addition to spending time with his family, he enjoys distance running and has run marathons in North America, Africa, and Europe.
