Having been a member of the Labour Party for eighteen years Jim worked with fellow party members to reinvigorate the local party and eventually was elected as Chairperson of the West Renfrewshire Constituency Labour Party.
Knowing that the Labour Party could make a real difference in people's lives in West Renfrewshire and that he had more to offer Jim put himself forward as a candidate for Renfrewshire Council in the 1999 elections and won the Erskine Central seat.
