InfoJulia Penelope was born on June 19, 1941, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, a true native of that state, with a Gemini sun, Aries moon, and Pisces rising. In 1959, she was "asked to leave" Florida State University because of her Lesbianism. Later that same year, she was also kicked out of the University of Miami. She drifted here and there, finally entering the City College of New York's evening school in 1962, taking nine hours of credit and working full-time as a file clerk. After matriculating at CUNY in 1964, she finished her coursework and graduated in January 1966, leaving immediately for graduate work at the University of Texas-Austin. Having completed her courses for a doctorate in English Linguistics, she moved to Athens, Georgia in 1968, for her first teaching position. In 1971, she was awarded her Ph.D.

She has been a prolific, if controversial, scholar, and was a pioneer researcher on the extent and nature of sexism in the English language and the ways it structures the semantics of the vocabulary, doing, as well, the only research on doublespeak that concentrates on how certain syntactic structures can be used to lie or euphemize. She was also one of the first scholars to teach women's studies courses, including Twentieth-Century Lesbian Novels and Feminist Literary Criticism. She now lives in Lubbock, Texas and works as a freelance lexicographer and copy editor.

Julia, a founder and current Co-Chair of the Lubbock County Green Party, will run as a Green on the party's Ten Key Values, using them as "The Justice Agenda" for her campaign. She hopes her candidacy will encourage progressives to register to vote and to come out to the polls, thus strengthening our growing network of Greens and our progressive partners in social justice, human rights, and environmental stewardship. She will emphasize three issues in her
campaign:

1. No war with Iraq, or any other nation. "Let's put
the spine back in Congress!"

2. Stop the privatization of our water supply.

3. Fight those who would turn West Texas into a dumping
ground for nuclear and other toxic wastes.
