InfoAs candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Sheila Simon offers a wealth of experience and lifetime of service. Sheila is a lawyer, teacher, and working mother. Her record of public service includes four years as a Jackson County prosecutor, four years as a Carbondale city council member, and participation in the Illinois Reform Commission.

Sheila at Work
Sheila graduated from Georgetown law school in 1987. Instead of choosing a big firm, she chose to work at Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance, providing legal services to those most in need. Sheila advocated for people facing domestic violence, discrimination, and loss of housing. One person at a time, one case at a time, Sheila helped to make a difference in people's lives.

Sheila then worked as an Assistant State's Attorney in Jackson County, where she prosecuted DUIs and domestic battery cases. Sheila also helped start Southern Illinois University's law school domestic violence clinic, which continues to serve clients and train law students.

Public Service
For Sheila, serving the community also means political participation. She served on the Carbondale city council for four years. As a council member she was a conservative steward of the city's budget of over $40 million, and consistently advocated for open, ethical government. Sheila's record on ethics made her a natural choice for service on Governor Quinn's Illinois Reform Commission, which helped to establish the first political contribution limits in Illinois law.

Family
Family has been and continues to be an important part of Sheila's life. Sheila's parents, the late Paul and Jeanne Simon, served in the Illinois House together, and were a lifelong team of public servants. Her father, Paul, is remembered across the state for his honesty and integrity in public service.

Sheila and her husband, Perry, were married in 1987. Perry teaches at John A. Logan Community College in Carterville, Illinois. Their daughter Reilly is in college and their daughter Brennan is in high school. Over the past year Sheila and Perry have welcomed Carla Paucar, an exchange student from Peru, into the family as an additional daughter. Filling out their extended family are the members of Sheila’s band, Loose Gravel, with whom she has performed for over ten years.

Goals
Gov. Quinn and Sheila Simon are not a new team. They have worked successfully in achieving campaign finance reform, and they look forward to working together on many shared goals. Both are passionate advocates for improving job opportunities for Illinoisans and both recognize the fundamental role of education in making those opportunities available to everyone. Sheila would like to use the office of Lt. Governor to build new partnerships for future job development. Sheila is committed to bringing together educational resources, large and small businesses, non-profit organizations and international contacts to help prepare Illinois for jobs in an increasingly green and global future.

The Lt. Governor also has specific responsibilities, many of which deal with rural and small-town Illinois. Sheila’s deep roots in southern Illinois and background in city and county government help her understand the importance of a voice for rural Illinois in our statehouse.

Sheila also has a long-standing commitment to addressing and preventing violence, particularly domestic violence. Here, too, the office of Lt. Governor can be used to bring together the wide array of community resources that need to work in concert in order to build a safer Illinois for our families and children.
