Info | born in Chicago, Ill., July 29, 1878; attended the parochial schools and St. Ignatius College, Chicago, Ill.; employed as a secretary with the building departments of the city of Chicago in 1905; graduated from Illinois College of Law at Chicago in 1908; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Chicago, Ill.; member of the faculty, Illinois College of Law 1909-1912; superintendent of public service, Cook County, Ill., 1910-1912; secretary of Webster College of Law, Chicago, Ill., 1912-1914; counsel for the Lincoln Park Commission 1933-1934 and for the Chicago Park District 1934-1936; chairman, Illinois Commerce Commission 1936-1939; appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Hamilton Lewis and served from April 14, 1939, to November 21, 1940, when a duly elected successor qualified; was an unsuccessful candidate for election to fill the vacancy; resumed the practice of law in Chicago, Ill.; died at his summer home at Lake Geneva, Wis., August 28, 1948; interment in Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Ill.
