| Info | Andrew George was born in 1958, one of eight sons and daughters of a smallholding horticulturalist and a music teacher of Mullion on the Lizard peninsula in the St Ives constituency.
Schooled at Mullion, Cury and Helston Comprehensive School. He won places at Sussex University and Oxford University (University College), specialising in Agricutural Economics.
Though he spent many years working away in what he calls `England’, he eventually took an opportunity to return to his native Cornwall in 1985 to work for a local charity. He became the Deputy Director of the Cornwall Rural Community Council, working to improve and develop community service across a range of voluntary initiatives.
Andrew’s charity work involved supporting community needs, especially in housing, pre-school education, economic development, financial support and community development. Andrew stood for Parliament in 1992 and slashed the majority of the sitting Tory MP for St Ives from nearly 8,000 to 1,600. He won the seat in 1997.
Andrew is renowned for his commitment to Cornwall, not just for its own sake, but also as an example to other parts of the country which share its history, identity and cultural and linguistic distinctiveness. His maiden speech was acclaimed for drawing attention to his commitment – and because he was the first person to use Cornish in the Commons.
His enthusiasm for the celebration of diversity has led him to lead and join local campaigns to protect individuals from deportation orders, such as the successful campaign to prevent the separation of Albert Tong from his Cornish wife and child. He is the President of the Council for Racial Equality in Cornwall and a Trustee of the Rural Race Equality Action Project. He is the author of several documents on Cornwall, and the co-author of Cornwall At The Crossroads (1989). His most recent publication is A View From The Bottom Left-Hand Corner (2002), which is available from the Lib Dem bookshop.
In the Commons, Andrew has served on the Agriculture Select Committee; he is the Liberal Democrat Shadow Rural Affairs Secretary. He is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Asthma Group, and Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Objective One group, Vice Chair of the All Party Fisheries Group and Vice Chair of the All Party Family Farms Group. Amongst others, he is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Domestic Violence, Voluntary Sector, Disability, Sustainable Waste and Recycling and Sustainable Energy. He has led adjournment debates on 15 subjects, so far including second home ownership, Cornish language, European structural funds, regional policy and fishing. He has spoken in the Chamber on many matters and has 18 Prime Minister questions in the last session, including NHS waiting times, Third World development and domestic violence amongst many other issues. Legislative work has included reform of the Child Support Agency, agricultural and fisheries legislation and disabilities issues in legislation.
Andrew and his St Ives-born wife Jill – daughter of internationally-renowned potter William Marshall and his wife Margery – were married in Madron Baptistry in 1987. Jill is a nurse at the West Cornwall Hospital. They have a daughter, Morvah (b. 1987), and a son, Davy (b. 1990), and live in Hayle.
He is an enthusiast for all sports including football (and plays when available for the Commons football teams), cricket (member of Leedstown Cricket Club and Commons team), rugby (member of Lords and Commons Rugby Team), tennis (member of Hayle Tennis Club), swimming, cycling and many other sports.
