InfoAdrian's connection with the constituency goes back many years. His grandfather, an electrical engineer, helped to put Taunton onto the National Grid in the late 1940s and 1950s. His mother went to what was then called Wearfield and then Bishop Fox's School, while his uncle attended Taunton School.

Adrian's first visit to Taunton was at the age of one month to visit the family friends who bought his grandparents' house in Hilary Road near the hospital. Adrian's family, his father is a well known wine merchant, lived in Somerset for many years and now lives in Bristol. Adrian went to school in Bath before going up to Oxford University where he read Modern History. He worked as a stockbroker for twelve years before becoming a consultant, specialising in strategic communications for a number of large companies.

His grandparents retired to Somerset in 1977 which was the year Adrian and his two brothers lost their mother to cancer. Sadly his uncle, who was a well-known local dentist and RNVR officer at Yeovilton, also died of cancer in 1988.

He has taken a very keen interest in a number of local charities, such as Somerset Cancer Macmillan who aim to raise £400,000 for specialist care nurses and local advisors, as well as Somerset Leukaemic Group for whom he ran the Taunton Half Marathon in April 2001. He was also instrumental in getting SURE (Somerset Unit for Radiotheraphy Equipment) going in September 2001. Set up by Barrie Palmer, a local policeman, it is aiming to raise enough money so that people in Taunton Deane and West Somerset no longer have to make the 100+ mile round trip to Bristol for their radiology treatment. It has so far raised £150,000.

Adrian was married to Frangelica in September 2003 and they live in Taunton. They met on the Liberty and Livelihood March in September 2002.

He is keen on sport but has to admit that his football playing days are now well over. However, that has not stopped him watching more sport than he would admit. He is a vice president of Somerset County Cricket Club and he is an enthusiastic member of Taunton Rugby Club.

Adrian 's Experience

Adrian was elected to Parliament in June 2001, representing the constituency of Taunton, which includes the towns of Wellington and Wiveliscombe and is surrounded by the beauty of the Blackdowns, Brendons and Quantocks.

He serves on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, which holds the Government department of that name to account. He signed up with the Royal Marines for 2002 as part of a Parliamentary Liaison scheme.

Adrian keeps in close contact with Somerset County Council, with Taunton Deane and West Somerset District Councils, and with the local Members of the European Parliament. Adrian travels widely in the constituency and, during the summer, undertakes a comprehensive itinerary of 'Rural Rides' visiting the more scattered smaller communities. He also meets representatives of all the Parish Councils to listen to and understand their concerns.

A wide range of public engagements, with an emphasis on voluntary groups, charities and local initiatives, is intended to provide them with both encouragement and useful publicity.
