| Info | Paul Nathan DeWeese, M.D. was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1998. During his first term in office, Republican caucus members elected him to the important post of Majority Whip.
Representative DeWeese represented the 67th State House District from 1998 to 2003. In the State House, Representative DeWeese served on five committees: Criminal Justice, Family and Children Services, Education, Health Policy and Insurance.
He and his wife Mary Grace Finn DeWeese, M.D. have three children � Luke (19), Jonathon (17), and Hudson (14).
Physician
Prior to serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, DeWeese served as the Assistant Medical Director in the Emergency Department at Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. He also worked at Three Rivers Hospital and Doctor�s Hospital in Jackson.
He is a graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine, and is board certified in Internal Medicine. He conducted his undergraduate work at Hope College, where he majored in Chemistry and Philosophy of Science. He served his residency at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids. While serving in the Legislature, DeWeese has continued to serve on staff in the Emergency Department at the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital.
Healer
In 1980-1981, DeWeese went on an international tour to study health care systems in Great Britain, the Ivory Coast, Yugoslavia, Canada, and the United States. This experience helped Paul to develop his life-long interest in the role of communities in providing access to health care.
In 1989, DeWeese spearheaded the creation of the Medical Access Project, which is currently administered by the Ingham County Health Department. He is also Past Vice-Chair of the Ingham County Board of Health.
In 2000 Representative DeWeese, along with Mayor Hollister and other Lansing leaders, traveled to Ghana as part of the Sister City Commission. They delivered an ambulance and 30,000 school books.
Advocate for Life
As a physician, a father, a lawmaker, and a Christian, Paul DeWeese has been an outspoken advocate for upholding the sanctity of life. DeWeese consistently earned a 100% voting record with the Michigan Right to Life and in the early 1990�s, served as an expert witness testifying on behalf of Michigan Right to Life in a court case involving a challenge by abortion rights activists to the Michigan law requiring parental consent for abortions sought by minors.
Education Reformer
For many years, Dr. DeWeese has been recognized as an educational leader. Dr. DeWeese championed key educational reform issues including school choice, high educational standards and increased direct parental involvement in the class room. Dr. DeWeese also worked on the creation of the "virtual charter school" for children of immigrant workers.
Community Leader
Prior to serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, Paul DeWeese served as an appointed member of the Michigan Municipal Bond Authority and the Crime Victims Compensation Commission. DeWeese currently serves as a Member of the State Board for Habitat for Humanity; President of the Foundation for Michigan�s Future; founder of Ingham County�s Medical Access Project; founder of State Employee Appreciation Day. He is a member of the Lansing Catholic Social Services Board, and a Past Board Member of Partnership for Learning. Paul is also a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus.
