David was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 15th, 1969. David now resides in Mason, Ohio with his wife Jenelle and their three sons. David currently works as a Senior Financial Analyst at Procter & Gamble. David learned the value of hard work at a very young age as he worked and lived for most of his adolescent life on a small horse ranch in the mountains of Utah. David also worked for local diary farmers and sheep ranchers.
David was raised in a home where love and respect for country were taught through example as well as words. Both his grandfathers served in the military. His father served 4 years in the United States Marine Corp. From a very early age, David remembers his father talking to him about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the amazing men who laid the foundation of our country. David’s father helped him understand the importance the Constitution plays in our society and that it is a document that is to be treated with great respect. David understands the important principle that the Constitution is the foundation of our legal system and that judges are to interpret laws and not legislate from the bench. David believes it is important that strict Constitutional constructionists be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States. David believes that the use of the filibuster on judicial nominees is not currently supported by our Constitution and will work hard to defeat the use of the filibuster for judicial nominees.

After graduating from high school, David attended the University of Utah for one year and then volunteered to serve a two- year proselytizing mission in Argentina for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. David’s mission taught him that serving others, regardless of their faith, was very rewarding. After his mission David returned to the University of Utah and completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. David then went on to Northwestern University and earned a Masters degree in Engineering Management and an MBA degree in
finance. Post MBA school, David worked for various Fortune 500 companies as a financial analyst and finance manager.

David began preparing to run for Federal Office in 2004, when he and his family were living in Tennessee and he worked for Eastman Chemical Company. The local Congressman Bill Jenkins had served for 10 years and was approaching his 70th birthday. While he was a nice man, he had not done anything significant while in Congress. David made the decision to challenge him. Congressman Jenkins was well liked and David gave him a good fight. However, the incumbent was re-elected and David has since reflected that his 14% share of the votes was significant given all the conditions of the race.

Not long after the race, David received new employment with Procter & Gamble as a finance manager and he and his family moved to Mason, Ohio. After settling in, David contacted the local Republican Party to get involved and inform them that he had run in the past and was interested in running again some time in the near future. However, after reviewing the qualifications, success, and voting record of the then current incumbent Rob Portman, David knew that defeating him was a near impossible task. Also, the Congressman seemed to support everything that David did and he had done a fabulous job.

After Rob Portman was appointed by President Bush to be the new Trade Representative David saw another opportunity to run for federal office. David reviewed the candidates for the special election that had been announced and felt the opportunity was right to try to be the Republican representative of the Ohio Second District. Though he was an unknown, he was certain that if enough people could hear him speak and feel his presence, they would be convinced he was the right candidate.

Unfortunately, time was not on his side. The Governor called for a very speedy election leaving all the candidates and citizens scrambling. In the end, David’s success was not in the votes he received but in the overwhelming concurrence that he was different and was what our country needed and that he should stay involved and run again. On many occasions, people would say, “You know I have known this other candidate for a long time and will probably vote for him but I really like you. Please don’t go away if things don’t work out in this rushed special election. We like you and can get behind you next time.” Though the votes David received were insignificant, the support from those he was able to reach was overwhelming. Even the Cincinnati Enquirer said “David Smith quotes Patrick Henry better than Patrick Henry does.” David moves people when he speaks.

David has a strong faith in God. He believes our country’s Founding Fathers were inspired in writing the Constitution and laying the foundation of our country. David is a pro-life conservative that believes families are the central unit of society and that our country’s strength is dependent on the strength of its individual families. David recognizes the burden to freedom and prosperity that our nation’s current financial situation has placed upon us. His strong education and in-depth experience provide him the foundation to successfully address the fiscal and economic problems we face.

At this critical time in our nation’s history it is important that we elect representatives who will support those values that make this country great. David R Smith is the right person to represent Ohio.
