InfoBiography

Eric Minamyer has been a Symmes Township Trustee since January 1995. He is currently the Board President. Prior to being elected Trustee, Eric served for six years as a member of the Indian Hill Board of Education as well as the Great Oaks Joint Vocational School Board.

Eric was born in Salem, Ohio in 1953, the youngest in a family of all boys. After attending Case Western Reserve University and West Point, Eric graduated from the University of Akron in 1975. He went on to law school at American University in the District of Columbia, graduating in 1978. While in law school he was an aide to a Congressman.

Following law school, Eric entered the United States Navy as a JAGC Officer. He served a total of four years on active duty in Washington DC and Norfolk, Virginia. While stationed in DC, Eric earned an advanced law degree (called an LL.M.) in Labor Law.

In 1983, he returned to private practice in Ohio focusing his practice on labor relations law and civil litigation. In 1997, he started his own firm, which he continues today. He has been a Juvenile Court Referee, a member of the Hamilton County Board of Zoning Appeals and a Court Arbitration Panel Chair. He also remained an active member of the Naval Reserve, rising to the rank of Navy Captain, the equivalent of a Colonel in the Army.

He is a Certified Ohio Peace Officer and a Special Deputy Hamilton County Sheriff. In addition to Patrol duties and details, Eric is a member of Task Force One, the Dive Search & Rescue Squad. He also is a Bass Drummer with the Sheriff’s Bagpipe & Drum Corps.

Eric lives on Alydar Court in the southern part of the Township. Eric is the father of two daughters and stepfather of three sons. Eric and his wife Debbie have two grandchildren and are looking forward to many more as years go by. Eric’s interests outside of Symmes Township and his family include golf, recreational SCUBA and gardening.

Military Duty

Since 2001, Eric has spent many months on active duty supporting Operations Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Iraqi Freedom. He is also a Desert Storm Veteran and he speaks Arabic. In 2001 to 2002, he was in Norfolk, Virginia and was able to travel home monthly to attend Township meetings. In February 2003 he was deployed to Japan as the Force Inspector General, overseeing preparedness and regulations. He returned for the July Township Meeting and was again called to duty starting July 8, 2003. He served as the Force Inspector General for Commander United States Naval Forces Central Command in the Middle East until September 30, 2003.

Accomplishments and Goals as a Trustee

Eric has been a Trustee for eight years, being elected in 1995 and re-elected unopposed in 1999. His accomplishments are many, but include:

*Expansion of the Park and Green Space Program, increasing the size of Symmes Park and adding new parks. Including the pending development of the Blong Road area into a park and memorial.

*Conceived and implemented the Road Resurfacing Program, under which every Township road has been or will be resurfaced every 10 years, thus reducing the cost of repairs and improving the quality of life for Symmes Residents. By the end of 2003, 60% of all streets will have been repaved.

*Addition of a Safety Resource Officer at Loveland High School and Symmes Elementary.

*Safety Sidewalk Program, in which sidewalks are being installed near schools and parks.

*Balanced Budgets and Fiscal Responsibility with the help of Clerk John Borchers.

*Increased Police protection in the form of newer and better equipment and more police coverage.

*Planned and organized building of new Fire Station/Sheriff’s Station near Seven Gables and Mason-Montgomery Road to be started in 2004.

*Improved relations with other governmental bodies including Ohio Department of Transportation and the County Engineer as well as neighboring communities.

*Working with the Loveland Symmes Fire Department to increase services and maintain a balanced budget.

*On April 9, 1999 Eric lead the relief effort following the tornado that struck Symmes. He worked 16-hour days for weeks and tirelessly for several months thereafter, overseeing many aspects of the recovery. He was Acting Township Administrator for two months during that time, receiving no pay except his usual Trustee stipend.

Eric believes the future of Symmes Township is bright. He looks forward to more park development like the Historic Zierverink property on Lebanon Road. He is committed to continuing the Road Resurfacing Program and our great Road Maintenance service. The improvement of Montgomery Road is coming soon and it is important to maintain good relations with ODOT and the County Engineer as we work together to minimize inconvenience and maximize long-term improvements. It promises to be a challenging time ahead and Eric says he is looking forward to being a part of it.
