Info | MITCHELL, Stephen Mix, a Delegate and a Senator from Connecticut; born in Wethersfield, Hartford County, Conn., December 9, 1743; pursued academic studies; graduated from Yale College in 1763; served as tutor in Yale College 1766-1769; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1770 and commenced practice in Newton, Conn.; returned to Wethersfield in 1772 and continued the practice of law; member, Connecticut General Assembly 1778-1784; member, State council 1784-1793, with the exception of 1786; associate justice of the county court of Hartford County 1779-1790, and presiding judge 1790-1793; Member of the Continental Congress 1785-1788; member of the State convention which ratified the Constitution of the United States in 1788; elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Roger Sherman and served from December 2, 1793, to March 3, 1795; was not a candidate for renomination in 1794; judge of the State supreme court 1795-1807, and chief justice 1807-1814; presidential elector on the Federalist ticket in 1800; member of the State constitutional convention in 1818; retired to Wethersfield, Conn., in 1814, where he died on September 30, 1835; interment in Wethersfield Cemetery.
