InfoFrederick has been home to Alex Mooney since the age of one. His parents instilled in him the value of hard work and a deep sense of patriotism based on their own life experiences.

Alex’s mother, Lala, was born and raised in Fidel Castro’s Cuba, where, around the time of the Bay of Pigs invasion, she and other members of her family were thrown into jail for seven weeks because they did not support Castro’s communist-government. No trial, no attorney-they were simply thrown in jail. Her uncle later died in prison due to his opposition to Cuba’s tyrannical regime. In her early 20’s, Lala was able to escape Cuba and come to America with barely a penny to her name.

She always emphasized how precious American freedoms are to Alex and his siblings. Because of her experience with a communist police state, she inspired in Alex a desire to fight for the American ideals set forth by our Founding Fathers.

Alex’s father, Vincent, was equally fervent in his devotion to his country. From a family of Irish immigrants, Vincent grew up in Long Island, New York. He met Lala when they both attended Catholic University, where Vincent was in the Reserve Officers Training Corps.

Soon after they married and were expecting their first child, America entered the Vietnam War. Vincent served as an Engineering Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. When he returned from Vietnam, the Mooney family grew to four children: Vincent III (Professor of Engineering & Computer Science at Georgia Tech), Alex, Patrick (a fundraiser) and Margaret (Assistant Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).
Young Alex

Alex attended Frederick High School, where he was elected president of the Student Government Association. He also played many sports including basketball and football. Alex was also a student thespian and performed in 3 school musicals. Alex continues to be supportive of the arts to this day.

Alex graduated from Dartmouth College in 1993 with a degree in philosophy. While at Dartmouth, Alex played rugby for three years. He was also a member of the Dartmouth Latino Coalition.
Enters Public Service & Throws his Hat in the Ring

Shortly after graduation, Senator Mooney served as an aide to western Maryland Congressman Roscoe Bartlett. After Republicans took over Congress in the 1994 elections, Alex worked as a legislative analyst for the House Republican Conference Committee – part of the leadership of Congress. Alex later left Capitol Hill to work for a small conservative public policy organization.

Alex has always considered his home town one of the greatest places to raise a family. However, over the years he watched as national state and local level government grew and the bureaucracy began taking more of your money and becoming more intrusive in your daily life. That is why he made the decision to run for Senate in 1998.

After knocking on thousands of doors and working tirelessly making his case to the voters of the Third District, Alex was rewarded with 63% of the vote and was sworn in on January 13, 1999, becoming the youngest and only Hispanic member of the Maryland State Senate.
Senator Mooney

Throughout his service to Maryland, Senator Alex X. Mooney, has consistently fought for the issues most important to the people of Frederick and Washington Counties: lowering taxes and reducing government spending, local control of education, better jobs, caring for our seniors, and ensuring we have a clean environment.

Senator Mooney received the Maryland Taxpayer of the Year award in 2000 and the National Hero of the Taxpayer Award for 2003 for consistently voting to protect the “little guy” by cutting burdensome government regulations and red tape on small businesses. Senator Mooney has also received the top business rating in the state by the Maryland Business for Responsive Government.

Currently, Senator Mooney sits on the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.
Marriage

Alex met his future wife, Dr. Grace Gonzalez, at a nearby hospital during the five weeks he spent with his father, Vincent, who had suffered multiple strokes. At the request of the Mooney family, Grace would visit the hospital to explain their father’s condition. After several surgical procedures, Alex’s father passed away. Grace was with the family when God finally took Alex’s father home.

During this time Alex saw in Grace compassion as well as strength and knew soon after he met her that she was the one that he wanted to marry. She agreed to his proposal and they were married in Annapolis on August 10, 2002.

Grace followed in her father’s footsteps in becoming a doctor. Grace’s father was a surgeon in Cuba for 20 years before coming to America with his wife and four children. Grace was born in New Jersey and is the youngest of five children; her three older sisters and older brothers were all born in Cuba. Grace finished her seven-year neurosurgery residency in July 2005 at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She received both her medical degree as well as her Ph.D. in pharmacology from George Washington University. Grace completed her undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University.

They have two children, Lucas Alexander born in 2003 and Camille Grace born in 2005.
