Info | A native of Chicago, Dawkins earned degrees from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He served as minister of education and associate minister at New York's Community Church before relocating to Los Angeles, where he served as minister of The People's Independent Church, one of the oldest community churches in the United States.
Working with the Office of Economic Opportunity as an associate director of VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America) Dawkins was responsible for establishing projects and assigning volunteers to local poverty programs in the U.S. and helped develop the framework for the Humphrey-Hawkins Bill, working closely with Congressman Augustus Hawkins.
He served as president of the Los Angeles NAACP and was West Coast coordinator for the historic March on Washington in August 1963. Later, he became affiliated with the Rev. Leon Sullivan in the development of the Opportunities Industrialization Centers (OIC) and served as vice chairman in that program.
He ran unsuccessfully on the Republican ticket for senator against Virginia Sen. Charles Robb. At the time of his death, he was working on the manuscript of his autobiography.
He is survived by his son, Maurice, and daughter, Susan, and his wife, Dr. Joan Scott Wallace.
