InfoLauren "Bubba" McDonald, Jr. is a native Georgian who brings a lifetime of business experience and public service to the Commission. Commissioner McDonald was appointed by then Governor Zell Miller to fill a vacant Commission seat on June 10, 1998. The voters of Georgia then overwhelming elected him to the Commission in November of that year. He served as Commission Chairman in 2001.

Commissioner McDonald spent his adult life in the hardware business as owner of McDonald Hardware and Builders Supply in Commerce, Georgia. He currently is a business partner with his son, Lauren III, in L.W. McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia.

Commissioner McDonald served 20 years in the Georgia House of Representatives, serving as Chair of the Industry Committee for five years and Chair of the budget-writing Appropriations Committee for eight years. He is also a former member of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioner McDonald is serving on two Committees of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissions: the Committee on Electricity and the Nuclear Electric Institute Liability Committee. He is the chair of the Subcommittee on Nuclear Issues Waste Disposal and a member of the Subcommittee on Strategic Issues.

He has also served as a member of the Board of Governors of Mercer Medical College, a director of the Small Business Development Center at the University of Georgia and as a member of the Board of the Advanced Technology Center at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

McDonald and his wife of 38 years, Sunny McDonald (Nivens), a retired educator, reside in Forsyth County. He is an elder in the Presbyterian Church. In his spare time he rides a Harley, plays golf and sings.
