Political profile
Sir John has been a Conservative MP since Mrs Thatcher's landslide of 1983, but has never served on the frontbench. The closest he came was a stint as PPS to Cecil Parkinson.
Nonetheless, he has become a senior backbencher by dint of long service.
He stood, without great success, for the position of Speaker and also tried to become chair of the Conservative backbench 1922 committee.
He was unfortunate to become the first person whom Michael Martin, as Speaker, expelled from the chamber.
Unusually for a member of the parliamentary Conservative party, he is pro-EU, coming from a right-wing economic position lionising free trade.
He successfully piloted a private members' bill through the Commons protecting the rights of residents of small care homes and introduced another one which would have removed the compulsion to purchase an annuity at 75.
In December 2003, he was knighted in recognition of his services to Parliament.
