| Info | Attorney Sharon McPhail is the first female attorney to be elected on Detroit's City Council. McPhail has 26 years of law experience which includes eight years as chief of screening for the District Courts in the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, Assistant United States Attorney wherein she establish a protocol for the defense of complex multi-district swine-flu litigation. She has also served as staff counsel for Ford Motor Company and later as a partner with the law firm Feikens, Stevens, Hurley & P.C., before going into private practice. Attorney McPhail's areas of expertise include: Municipal law, labor relations, civil trial practice, employment, and corporate.
McPhail is the eldest of seven children and the first college graduate in her family. She was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1976, after graduating from Northeastern University School of Law. She attended the University of Michigan Law School for a year as a transfer student.
Upon graduation Attorney McPhail volunteered in the community as well as practiced law in the City of Detroit. Later in her career, she served as President of the National Bar Association, Chairperson and member of the Detroit Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. Moreover, McPhail was appointed by former President Bill Clinton to participate on the Senior Advisory Council to the Transition team cluster group for Justice and Civil rights. And in 1993 she was the first woman to win a primary election for Mayor of the City of Detroit. Though she did not win the general election, many of the issues and concerns she raised during the election became part of the programmatic agenda and administration of Detroit's former Mayor.
McPhail's prominent career brought her recognition throughout the country. She was a recipient of numerous awards including Ebony Magazine's 100 Most Influential Black Americans, The March of Dimes Humanitarian of the Year award, The Woman of Excellence award from the Renaissance Chapter of the Links, The National Sojourner Truth Meritorious Service Award from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc., and the Bill of Rights and Black History award.
She is married and has two daughters. When asked which of her many accomplishments she treasures most, she point to only two - Angela and Erika, her two daughters. She credits her strength and determination to her grandmother, Ada J. McPhail and her parents, Robson and Natalie McPhail who raised her to believe that every opportunity to help someone is a gift and a blessing.
It is with this deep appreciation and understanding of purpose that compelled McPhail to work, without pay, as general counsel to "Keep the Vote No Takeover." This organization is a coalition dedicated to recapturing the right to vote for School Board in the City of Detroit.
Finally, McPhail became a lawyer to be an advocate for all people. As a practicing attorney for 26 years McPhail has successfully fought for justice and she will continue to fight on a greater level as a city council member.
