Info | Rancher and oilman Clayton Williams knows a lot about doing things nature's way in this country. About as Texan as anybody can be, he'll tell you that only the native Comanches have deeper roots in this land than his family. His great grandfather was a frontier judge in Ft. Stockton when the area was being settled...and when guns were still carried into the county courthouse, and sometimes used there.
Some years ago Williams started buying back his daddy's land near Ft. Stockton, land his family was forced to sell nearly 50 years ago. Here the present-day Williams Ranch Company operates a 12,000-acre farm and ranch that is divided between 6,000 acres of irrigated crops and grazing land. Alfalfa alone covers 3,000 acres of the farm. Wheat is grown for winter grazing, then harvested in summer for grain. Cotton is farmed on a shared basis.
Williams has other ranches in West Texas which, together with the Ft. Stockton farm, run about 3,000 head of mother cows a year.
