InfoJohn Marty has been a member of the Senate since 1987. He has authored numerous environment, education, crime and DWI laws. Marty is chair of the Senate Environment Committee and has passed several major government reform laws.

Marty is a graduate of St. Olaf College with a B.A. in Ethics. The son of author and theologian Martin Marty, John is a former corporate foundation administrator and is a free-lance writer. John and his wife Connie have two children and live in Roseville.

"As I listen to people tell of their hopes and dreams, I don't hear them say they want government to give up; I do hear them say they want government working for them instead of for special interests. They want living-wage jobs and quality schools, not large taxpayer subsidies for private businesses or for wealthy team owners. They want cost-saving investments in children, positive steps to prevent domestic abuse and violence. I have been outspoken and effective in fighting these battles, my record is clear and consistent. I will continue working with people to fulfill their goals and dreams for our state's future."

Empower people through education and jobs. Senator Marty is working to give parents and teachers the tools they need to make our schools excel—from preschool to higher education. He has pushed legislation to tackle the growing wage gap and the lack of job security.

Build for the future. John works for policies that prevent crime, urban sprawl, welfare dependency, and environmental degradation. This is not an option we can afford to ignore—environmental protection is not a luxury. And, moving people from welfare to work is not only the right thing to do, it is fiscally smart. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Promote responsibility -- in government, in business, and in people. John has been working for better fiscal management in government. He is an outspoken opponent of pork-barrel spending and government subsidies to private businesses. He promotes corporate responsibility to employees, to consumers, the community, and the environment. And he promotes responsibility in families, encouraging parents to read to children and prepare them for school. He supports volunteer work, mentoring and civic involvement to strengthen our communities.
