Info | BARDEN, Graham Arthur, a Representative from North Carolina; born in Turkey Township, Sampson County, N.C., September 25, 1896; moved to Burgaw, Pender County, N.C., in 1908; attended the public schools; during the First World War served as a seaman in the United States Navy in 1918 and 1919; was graduated from the law department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1920; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in New Bern, N.C.; teacher in the New Bern (N.C.) High School in 1920; judge of the county court of Craven County, N.C., 1920-1924; member of the State house of representatives in 1933; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth and to the twelve succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1935-January 3, 1961); chairman, Committee on Education (Seventy-eighth and Seventy-ninth Congresses), Committee on Education and Labor (Eighty-first, Eighty-second, and Eighty-fourth through Eighty-sixth Congresses); was not a candidate for renomination in 1960; died in New Bern, N.C., January 29, 1967; interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
