Entered politics in 1950, supporting the primary campaign of Willis Smith who won the Democratic nomination for the US Senate and was then elected.

Leader of faction of the NC Democratic Party in 1952 asking voters not to vote for Adlai Stevenson for president

Contender for the 1954 US Senate nomination in the Democratic primaries. A proto-libertarian, Wingfield believed in a very limited government restricted to a small number of police powers. He placed third in the primary.

In 1960, he sued the City of Raleigh for giving him a parking ticket, claiming that the City did not have the authority to give such tickets. His case had risen to the state superior court at the time of his death.

Committed suicide on 10/24/1960 beside a burial ground in Raleigh
