Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives, 1975-1983

He is a native of Clarke County, was educated in the public schools of Jackson, at Marion Military Institute, and the University of Alabama. During World War II he served in the U. S. Air Force in the China-Burma-India and Pacific Theaters.

Speaker McCorquodale is the owner of McCorquodale Insurance Agency, is president of Overstreet and McCorquodale Forest Products, Inc., and chairman of the Board of the Washington County State Bank. He also serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association and a director of Clarke-Washington Industries.

First elected to the House of Representatives in 1959, Mr. McCorquodale served on the Interim Committee, on Finance and Taxation, the Fiscal Advisory Committee to the Governor, the Legislative Council, as vice-chairman of the Legislative Committee on Public Accounts, as co-chairman Alabama Constitutional Commission, the Coosa Valley, Tombigbee Valley and Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Authorities, the Alabama Historical Commission, and the Study Commission on Alabama's Judicial System. In 1967 the Capitol Press Corps elected him the Hardest Working Member of the House and in 1971 the Outstanding Member of the House.

He is vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of Livingston State University, chairman of the Alabama Toll Bridge Authority, vice chairman of the Alabama Forestry Commission, chairman of the Southem States Speakers' Conference, and on the executive committee of the National Council of State Legislators.

Mr. McCorquodale has served as church school superintendent and chairman of the Official Board of the First United Methodist Church in Jackson. He is married to the former Betty McCrary and is the father of two sons, Joseph, III, and Gaines C. McCorquodale, and the grandfather of four.
