Congresswoman Roybal-Allard maintains a busy schedule working out of her offices in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, CA. She has been in Congress since 1992, and represents the 34th Congressional District of California. Congresswoman Roybal-Allard's district includes downtown Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, and eight southeast cities of Los Angeles County.
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard works hard to expand the opportunities for residents of her district and working families throughout the country. She champions efforts to modernize and upgrade public schools, improve school safety, increase the federal minimum wage, reduce the high Hispanic drop-out rates, preserve Social Security and Medicare, and stimulate economic growth to create new jobs.
While in Washington, the Congresswoman casts votes on important national issues in the U.S. Capitol Building. She serves on several different committees and task forces that focus on her most important priorities.
As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, one of the most powerful and distinguished committees in Congress, she spends much of her time attending hearings and meetings. She is the first Latina in U.S. history to be appointed to the Appropriations Committee, which controls the purse strings of the federal government. The Congresswoman serves on two influential subcommittees -- the Subcommittee on Homeland Security and the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education . As a member of these two subcommittees, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard oversees funding of the new Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Coast Guard, U.S. Customs Service, Department of Labor, Department of Health and Human Services, and Department of Education.
In response to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard was appointed to the Democratic Homeland Security Task Force. She serves as the Vice-Chair of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Subcommittee, where she is working to develop policies focusing on training emergency workers, preparing for chemical and biological attacks, and coordinating disaster preparedness efforts between local, state, and national governments.
While in Washington, the Congresswoman often receives visits from Los Angeles residents, business owners, educators, veterans, workers, and students. They travel to see their nation's capitol and talk with their Congresswoman about issues important to them.
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard often travels back and forth between California and Washington, D.C. Her time in Washington, D.C. centers around her committee responsibilities and votes on key bills pending before Congress.While in Los Angeles, the Congresswoman also spends much of her time meeting with residents and community leaders to discuss ways to improve the quality of life in the 34th Congressional District.
For example, the Congresswoman hosts workshops and fairs to inform residents about important topics. In recent years, she has hosted workshops on health, crime prevention, safety issues, citizenship, first-time home buying, and government services.
In order to help local groups obtain federal grant money, the Congresswoman established the Grants Notification Program. It gives potential applicants advance notification of upcoming federal grant opportunities and helps them apply for these grants. This program has helped to bring millions of federal dollars to the district.
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard also sponsors a Student Information Program which provides students and local schools with scholarship, financial aid, internship, and fellowship information for college.

Congresswoman Roybal-Allard's Early Years
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard was born and raised in Boyle Heights, California. She is the eldest daughter of Lucille Beserra Roybal and retired Congressman Edward R. Roybal, a Member of Congress for 30 years.
A 1965 graduate of California State University at Los Angeles, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard is the mother of two adult children, Lisa Marie and Ricardo Olivarez, and the grandmother of Diego Olivarez. She is married to Edward T. Allard, III.
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard's Political Career
Prior to being elected to Congress in 1992, Congresswoman Roybal-Allard represented the 56th Assembly district of California for six years. Upon being elected to Congress, the Congresswoman developed a reputation as a skilled consensus builder. During the 106th Congress, she served as the first female Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, an 18-member coalition of Hispanic Members of Congress.
During the 105th Congress (1998-1999), Congresswoman Roybal-Allard served as chair of the 29-member California Democratic Congressional delegation. She was the first woman, first Latina, and the first Member to assume this position through election rather than seniority.
