InfoOccupation: Farmer
Farmer. Father. Husband. South Dakotan raised and educated. A leader in Agriculture, not just in South Dakota, but across the country. That's Larry Diedrich. Not only does he share our values, but he lives them - noted by a track - record of commitment and results here in the state. Larry Diedrich has the real world, real life experience South Dakota can trust.

Larry grew up working on his family's farm near Elkton, attended Elkton High School and went on to graduate from South Dakota State University with a degree in Animal Science. Today, Larry carries on the traditions passed down from his parents. Having purchased the farm, Larry and his wife Jackie continue to live and work on the original land - raising 4 children and two foster children as well.

He understands on a very personal level the challenges facing South Dakota families. From good jobs and crop prices, to how good the local schools are and having health insurance, Larry has faced these issues in his day-to-day life. He too knows firsthand the difficulties that can arise in trying to balance the obligations between raising a family and running your own business. He's been there himself and worried about the same things.

Larry's professional life has been dedicated to agriculture and the farm he grew up on. He and his brother raise soybeans, corn and hogs. Diedrich's leadership ability was evident early on. Before his 30th birthday, Larry was elected President of the South Dakota Soybean Association and grew the membership from less than 200 members to almost 1500. His leadership there did not go unnoticed. Larry was soon selected to join the board of the National Soybean Association. In 1994, he was elected President of that organization, bringing South Dakota agriculture to the world. He led trade missions to Mexico, China, the European Union and former Soviet Union, and in turn brought trade delegations from all corners of the globe to South Dakota. His efforts paid off and exports grew.

In 1996, Larry was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives. While in the House, he was actively engaged in social and budgetary issues - having served as Chair of the Retirement Laws Committee and as a member of the Education and Taxation Committees. In 2000, he was elected to the Senate where he was Chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. Continuing his focus on efforts on issues affecting his family and all families -- agriculture, education, job protection, and lower taxes. Larry was regarded as an active member of the Senate's Education and Taxation Committees.

Larry's personal faith drives him to help bring a better life to his family and his state. The Chairman of the St. Williams Catholic Church Council, he is also a member of South Dakota Right to Life.

Among the other leadership roles and honors awarded to Larry are: Pheasants Forever, American Soybean Association, National Corn Growers Association, South Dakota Pork Producers Council, South Dakota Farm Bureau, Elks Club and Knights of Columbus. Honors include the American Soybean Association's Meritorious Service Award, South Dakota Jaycee Outstanding Young Farmers runner-up, Gamma Sigma Delta SDSU Alumni Award, Brookings Conservation District Achievement Award, Outstanding Officer of the Knoxville Jaycees, Argus Leaders "People's Choice Award" for South Dakota's Top Farmer and most recently the South Dakota Corn Growers Association's "Friends of Ethanol" Award.
