InfoDavid Shafer, a Republican, was first elected to the Georgia Senate from Georgia's 48th District in 2002. He represents portions of Fulton and Gwinnett counties.

He is Chairman of the Science and Technology Committee, Vice Chairman of Insurance and Labor Committee, and Secretary of Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee. He also serves on the Reapportionment and Redistricting and Banking and Financial Institutions Committees. Shafer served as Administration Floor Leader for Governor Sonny Perdue during the 2004 Legislative Session.

Shafer is Chairman of the Gwinnett Senate Delegation. He is also a member of the Georgia Technology Overview Committee.

A small business owner, Shafer is president of a Duluth based corporate public relations firm. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. He belongs to Gwinnett County Historical Society, Duluth Historical Society and Duluth Merchants Association. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Gwinnett County.

Long active in the community, Shafer served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Gwinnett County Library System and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the former Gwinnett-Forsyth Regional Library System. He has also served on the Board of Directors of United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Atlanta, the Partnership Against Domestic Violence (formerly Georgia Council on Battered Women), and the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce.

He served as Executive Director of the Georgia Republican Party in the early 1990's. In 1996, Shafer was nominated to be the Republican candidate in a special statewide election for Secretary of State. He campaigned on a platform of fighting voter fraud, and his centerpiece idea, that of requiring voters to show identification when they vote, was passed into law in 1997.
