InfoDr. Horacena Tate was first elected to the Georgia State Senate from the 38th District in 2003. Senator Tate, a Democrat, represents part of Fulton County. In the Senate, Sen. Tate currently is serving on the Appropriation, Health and Human Services, Retirement and State and Local Government committees.

Born in Griffin and raised in Atlanta, Sen. Tate attended school in the Fulton City School System and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in 1973. She obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Georgia in 1977. After graduating, Sen. Tate began her formal working career as an employee in the Georgia Department of Labor in 1977, and at one time spent one month of volunteer service in the Office of a former Governor, the Honorable Jimmy Carter. She spent several years as an employee of United Airlines and Apollo Travel Services.

To further her formal educational pursuits, Dr. Tate re-entered Atlanta University in 1987 and in 1988, received a Masters degree in Educational Administration from Atlanta University and her Ed.D in Educational Administration from Clark-Atlanta University in 1992.

Dr. Horacena Tate currently serves as President of Tate, Marsh and Associates, Inc., a software training, management training and technical writing firm.

Sen. Tate is very active in community affairs. She has been the computer literacy advisor for the Butler Street YMCA, a volunteer software instructor for local churches, a delegate representing Clark-Atlanta University at the International Community Education Conference held in Trinidad and a speaker for several Metro Atlanta public school functions. During 2001, she served a Vice President of Rosalie Wright Community Council.

Sen. Tate has been an active member of the Cascade United Methodist church for many years. Also, she is a member of the United Methodist Women Group and holds membership in a National sorority and has held a leadership role as Corresponding Secretary for one of the sorority’s local chapters.

Dr. Horacena Tate was initially elected to the Georgia Senate during the fall of 1998 and began serving her initial term of office in January 1999.
