InfoDon Balfour of Snellville was first elected to the Georgia Senate from the 9th District in 1992. He Represents portions of Gwinnett County. Sen. Balfour, a Republican, serves as Chairman of the Senate Rules committee. He also serves on the Appropriations, Education and Youth, Ethics and Health and Human Resources committees. Sen. Balfour is also an ex-officio member of the Insurance and Labor committee. Sen. Balfour has also represented Georgia as an alternate member of the Fiscal Affairs and Government Operations Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference (SLC), the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the National Republican Legislators Association (NRLA) and the Republican Governor’s Association (RGA). During the 1993 legislative session, Sen. Balfour sponsored legislation to discourage predatory lending practices and to simplify the appeals process on property tax assessments. Sen. Balfour was the chief sponsor of a resolution in the 1994 General Assembly calling on the Department of Transportation to withdraw a proposal to build the second Atlanta airport in Gwinnett County because of the adverse impact that the facility would have. Plans for the airport were later shelved because of the strong opposition. During the 1996 session, Sen. Balfour successfully co-sponsored a new law which requires insurance companies to provide coverage for a minimum hospital stay of at least two days for mothers and newborns following normal deliveries and four days after Caesarian births. Active in professional and community affairs, Sen. Balfour is on the board of both the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce. He also serves as the President of the Brightwater Home Owners Association. Sen. Balfour and his wife, Ginny, are the parents of a son, Trey. They attend Grace Fellowship Church.
