Larry Conrad, a former Secretary of State of Indiana, died Saturday at the Cardiology Hospital in Lyons, France. He was 55 years old. Mr. Conrad suffered a ruptured aorta while attending a conference in France last month and died after undergoing open-heart surgery, Gov. Evan Bayh's office announced. Mr. Conrad was a legislative assistant to former Senator Birch Bayh, the father of the Governor, in the 1960's and was chief counsel to the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on constitutional amendments from 1964 to 1969. He helped to draft the 25th Amendment, which deals with Presidential succession and disability.
Mr. Conrad was Indiana's Secretary of State from 1970 to 1978. In 1976 he was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for governor.
In Lyons, he attended a conference of Partners for Livable Places, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving community quality of life, economic development and social equity. Mr. Conrad was treasurer of the group. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; three sons, a daughter, his mother and one grandchild.
