Info | Senator Barbara Blackmon is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Jackson State University at the age of 19. She entered the University of Alabama and graduated with a Master's Degree in Business Administration at the age of 20. Senator Blackmon began law school at Santa Clara Law School and received her Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law. She received a Master's Degree in Tax Law from New York University Law School.
Senator Barbara Blackmon was admitted to the Mississippi State Bar in 1981 and the New York State Bar in 1982. She practiced law in New York with Bristol Myers Company. She returned to Jackson and worked as an associate attorney with the law firm of Banks and Nichols. Senator Blackmon is currently the managing partner in the law firm of Blackmon and Blackmon in Canton. Senator Barbara Blackmon was elected to the Mississippi State Senate in a special election in 1992. She currently represents Madison, Yazoo and Humphrey counties. In the Senate, Barbara Blackmon has served on the powerful Legislative Budget Committee; the Department of Human Services Oversight Committee; Chair of the State Library Committee; Vice-Chair of the Finance Committee; Vice-Chair of the Insurance Committee; the Constitution Committee; the Local and Private Committee; the Appropriations Committee; the Judiciary Committee; and the Highways and Transportation Committee.
Senator Blackmon is at the forefront of children's issues, health care policies, economic development initiatives and matters concerning our senior citizens. Senator Blackmon is the Chair for the Foundation for Education and Economic Development (FEED), a non-profit organization committed to increasing educational, economic, and social development opportunities for Mississippians. Senator Blackmon is a member of the Board of Directors of Jackson State University's Development Foundation, the American Red Cross of Mississippi, United Way of the Capital Area, Stewpot of Canton, and the National Black Caucus of States Institute.
Senator Barbara Blackmon is married to Representative Edward Blackmon, Jr., and they have two children: Madison Edward and Bradford Jerome. She is a member of Cade Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
